Do you also feel we are one with nature and should all make better choices to protect our planet? So, engaging with sustainable businesses is important to you, including during your travels.
As a nature lover, you'll be thrilled to learn that looking for sustainable luxury accommodation in New Zealand won’t be a difficult quest. Your eco-retreat on Waiheke Island, Auckland, awaits: An award-winning 5-star boutique hotel surrounded by nature and in harmony with it.
Omana is more than a stay; it’s an immersive experience amidst the natural world that will make your honeymoon, anniversary or getaway more meaningful and unforgettable.
Omana was built in a very special spot in the heart of Waiheke Island. Secluded atop a hill overlooking the beautiful Woodside Bay, our private villa accommodation was designed for couples and individuals seeking tranquillity and to be immersed in nature, leaving all worries of daily life behind.
Experienced travellers with entrepreneurial spirits, Omana’s founders have always searched for luxury accommodations in their own adventures, and that wouldn’t sacrifice nature’s well-being. This inspired the development and construction of Omana as an eco-luxury retreat on Waiheke Island.
In other words, being sustainable has been our mission from day one, as we want to preserve this piece of paradise and allow others to embrace nature without giving up luxury.
This commitment hasn’t gone unnoticed. Only two years after opening our doors in 2021, Omana was awarded the prestigious Gold certification by Qualmark in the Sustainable Tourism Business category and a 5-Star Boutique & Lodge rating.
Later in 2024, World Travel Awards – the ‘Oscars’ of the travel industry – named Omana Oceania’s Leading Boutique Hotel. These and other accolades testify to our efforts in eco and luxury travel.
Now, let’s dive deep into Omana’s pristine private beach waters and learn a few examples of what makes our 5-star boutique hotel sustainable accommodation.
As part of our efforts to preserve Waiheke’s environment, we have invested significantly in planting several hundred native plants to help increase the local fauna and flora coverage of our land.
One way our guests can help with this mission is by simply booking their stay with us. Through a partnership with the incredible organisation Trees That Count, Omana is able to convert each booking into a new tree for nature.
As a result of our reforestation initiatives, we have seen a steady increase in native birds in the forest, including the tuis – you can spot these birds while on a beautiful walk in Waiheke.
This has also happened due to our effort to control pests to protect our forests and native birds. Furthermore, currently, two-thirds of our land is covered by native plants, and one-third is productive land.
Here at Omana, all water requirements are met via rain, our own borehole and spring water.
The kitchenette tap in each private villa has filtered and sparkling water, so no plastic bottles are needed. Good quality water is provided to all guests with minimal wastage, and water waste is treated on-site.
Also, we provide recycling bins in the villas, ensuring waste is properly separated and destined.
The whole process of building Omana took into account the highest level of insulation to minimise energy usage.
All our electricity requirements are met by solar energy and by a fully renewable energy provider. Solar energy is generated by solar panels on the roof of Villa Serenity and stored in a battery stack in the plant room under Villa Haven.
Speaking of using resources smartly, our dedicated car park is equipped with an EV charger for guests with electric cars.
As we offer luxury vehicle rentals as part of our exclusive services, this is also a way to encourage and welcome those who have chosen a more sustainable alternative to petroleum-based fuels.
On this note, getting the car ferry to Waiheke is one of the easiest ways to get to Waiheke Island from Auckland. The journey takes around one hour, with beautiful views along the way.
If you're not familiar with this, Manaakitanga is a powerful expression that demonstrates how the Maori communities care about each other's well-being. We embrace it as part of Omana's values.
That is why we provide our guests daily with a gourmet breakfast sourced from a local producer. Our exclusive dine-in selection is also beautifully and deliciously made by a local chef. Moreover, our contractors, including gardening and villa servicing, are from the Waiheke community.
There are other examples of our deep commitment to this land, its people and visitors:
As a result of all our efforts to enhance the local culture, we have received outstanding customer reviews.
As we mentioned Manaakitanga, you might be interested in knowing that the local Iwi blessed Omana's land in a moving ceremony. To ask permission to develop the business, and in return, we pledged to honour and look after the land.
Besides valuing the local culture, we are delighted to welcome travellers from all over the world and offer a memorable eco-luxury experience. Over the past years, we have welcomed distinguished guests from several APAC countries, including Australia, China, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan, as well as Europe, and the United States and Canada.
Hollywood and world stars have also chosen Omana as their exclusive celebrity retreat.
